About Hailey
On Friday June 24th, 2005, 9 year old Hailey Beth Kramer of Defiance Missouri was riding her bicycle to a nearby neighbor's house. The quick bike ride turned tragic when Hailey lost control and struck head-on into a wooden roadside post. Suffering from severe head trauma, she was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis and shortly thereafter was placed in a medically induced coma to allow time for her brain to heal. Hailey has undergone multiple surgeries due to the swelling in her brain and subsequent infections. Hailey is stable and breathing on her own, but is capable of only small amounts of movement. At this time she can not walk or talk and has permanent damage to her vision and hearing.
Doctors anticipate that the road to recovery will be very long with extensive physical and speech therapy. Hailey usually wears her helmet when riding her bike, but because it was such a quick ride, it was left behind.
